The other day I posted this amazing piece of writing by Sonny Carroll titled The Awakening. It is lengthy so I understand if it was missed or skimmed, but I encourage you to take the time--when you truly have the time--to read it. I was, and still am deeply moved by the wisdom, and in all honesty was hit square in the face with my awakening. While I connect with several sentences and paragraphs, I realize the many areas I am lacking and understand I have so much [more] to learn in this life before I am remotely close to being in that overall stage of life.
I read this very post about a year ago and it didn't seem to strike a chord within me as it did last week. Last week was a emotional week, and three things hit me hard:
A specific scene from an episode of Sex and the City
Lifting Your Eyes Off The Weeds, by Max Lucado, and
The Awakening, by Sonny Carroll
I caught this episode one night last week (gotta love those reruns!):
I have always been the person everyone goes to, to vent, talk things out, gain perspective, a shoulder to cry on, get advice, etc. I have also had the same phone number for over 10 years, and my friends know it will ALWAYS be on and no matter what time it is, I will answer (drives the boyfriend nuts!).
That being said, I am guilty for saying the exact same thing Miranda said to Carrie (1:17 - 1:26) to one of my friends. I was fed up with this friend crying over her "Mr. Big" and interminably going back to him.
I am also guilty of what Carrie accuses Miranda of: "writing people off" - I have always referred to this as the light switch, that can be turned on or off, and in my past (and probably now..) it was "easy" for me to write people off. When people crossed a line with me, I was done.
And finally, another thing I do that Miranda did in this scene is: walk away.
It is more often with my close family, those I love most and drive me crazy. In arguments or times where I am boiling over, I find myself lost for words or so overwhelmed with emotions all I can do is walk away.
While reading this:
It’s so easy to be ungrateful—to make the mistake my friend’s caddie made.
Scott’s a professional golfer who plays at the Masters Golf Tournament hosted by the Augusta National Golf Club. The Augusta National is to golfers what the Smithsonian is to history buffs: the ultimate experience! You’d think you walked into an oil painting. Groomers manicure that course as if she’s a wedding-day bride.
Scott said, “You won’t see a single weed all week!”
Imagine Scott’s surprise when his caddie announced, “I found one!”
Don’t we do the same? We walk in a garden of grace. God’s love sprouts around us like lilacs—but we go on weed hunts. How many flowers do we miss in the process?
Lift your eyes off the weeds. Collect your blessings—His kindnesses.
Assemble your reasons for gratitude. And choose to make every day—a great day!I couldn't help but read between the lines. Maybe Carrie was right (1:30~). To top it off, I think I'm Scott's Caddie! How many flowers have I missed while spotting weeds? No one is perfect, and we all need encouragement - which I know - so why am I so tough all the time?
I could not have written this better, so with that thought in mind, I’d like to present something wonderful that I am posting from writer Sonny Carroll...
A time comes in your life when you finally get it…when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out…ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying and blaming and struggling to hold on.
Then, like a child quieting down after a tantrum, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.
This is your awakening.
You realize it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change, or for happiness, safety and security to magically appear over the next horizon. You realize that in the real world there aren’t always fairy tale endings, and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you… and in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.
You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are… and that’s OK. They are entitled to their own views and opinions.
You learn the importance of loving and championing yourself… and in the process a sense of new found confidence is born of self-approval. You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you – or didn’t do for you – and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected.
You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say and that not everyone will always be there for you and that everything isn’t always about you.
So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself… and in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.
You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to accept people as they are and to overlook their shortcomings and human frailties… and in the process a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness.
You learn to open up to new worlds and different points of view. You begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for.
You learn the difference between wanting and needing and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you’ve outgrown, or should never have bought into to begin with.
You learn that there is power and glory in creating and contributing and you stop maneuvering through life merely as a “consumer” looking for your next fix.
You learn that principles such as honesty and integrity are not the outdated ideals of a bygone era, but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon which you must build a life.
You learn that you don’t know everything, it’s not your job to save the world and that you can’t teach a pig to sing. You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that martyrs get burned at the stake.
Then you learn about love. You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would have them be. You learn that alone does not mean lonely.
You stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes. You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say NO.
You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs.
You learn that your body really is your temple. You begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You begin to eat a balanced diet, drink more water, and take more time to exercise.
You learn that being tired fuels doubt, fear, and uncertainty and so you take more time to rest. And, just as food fuels the body, laughter fuels our soul. So you take more time to laugh and to play.
You learn that, for the most part, you get in life what you believe you deserve, and that much of life truly is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You learn that anything worth achieving is worth working for and that wishing for something to happen is different than working toward making it happen.
More importantly, you learn that in order to achieve success you need direction, discipline and perseverance. You also learn that no one can do it all alone, and that it’s OK to risk asking for help.
You learn the only thing you must truly fear is fear itself. You learn to step right into and through your fears because you know that whatever happens you can handle it and to give in to fear is to give away the right to live life on your own terms.
You learn to fight for your life and not to squander it living under a cloud of impending doom.
You learn that life isn’t always fair, you don’t always get what you think you deserve and that sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good people… and you learn not to always take it personally.
You learn that nobody’s punishing you and everything isn’t always somebody’s fault. It’s just life happening. You learn to admit when you are wrong and to build bridges instead of walls.
You learn that negative feelings such as anger, envy and resentment must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the universe that surrounds you.
You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted, things that millions of people upon the earth can only dream about: a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed, a long hot shower.
Then, you begin to take responsibility for yourself by yourself and you make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never, ever settle for less than your heart’s desire.
You make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting, and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.
You hang a wind chime outside your window so you can listen to the wind.
Finally, with courage in your heart, you take a stand, you take a deep breath, and you begin to design the life you want to live as best you can.
I can't even begin to count how many breathtaking rainbows we have had lately. I realize it has been a rainy tropical paradise the past couple weeks, but these beautiful gifts from the Lord illustrate He is listening, and is with us. I literally gasp when I see His promise in the sky, and my iPhone just doesn't give it justice. We have literally been in the rainbow and I feel so blessed to be surrounded by so much beauty in this very uncomfortable and insecure time.

"He vies for the bedside position, hoping to be the first voice you hear. He covets your waking thoughts, those early, pillow-thoughts of stress. He awakes you with words of worry, stirs you with thoughts of stress. If you dread the day before you begin your day, mark it down, your giant has been by your bed.
And he's just getting warmed up. He breathes down your neck as you eat your breakfast, whispers in your ear as you walk out the door, shadows your steps, and sticks to your hip. He checks your calendar, reads your mail, and talks more trash than players in an inner-city basketball league.
"You ain't got what it takes."
"You come from a long line of losers."
"Fold your cards and leave the table. You've been dealt a bad hand."
He's your giant, your Goliath. Given half a chance, he'll turn your day into his Valley of Elah, taunting, teasing, boasting, and echoing claims from one hillside to the other. Remember how Goliath misbehaved? "For forty days, twice a day, morning and evening, the Philistine giant strutted in front of the Israelite army" (1 Sam. 17:16 NLT).
Goliaths still roam our word. Debt. Diaster. Dialysis. Danger. Deceit. Disease. Depression. Super-size challenges still swagger and strut, still pilfer sleep and embezzle peace and liposuction joy. But they can't dominate you. You know how to deal with them. You face giants by facing God first.
Focus on giants--you stumble.
Focus on God--your giants tumble."There are so many other dog-eared pages I wanted to share, too, but I encourage you to pick this book up and read it when ever you can. I think the reason Max Lucado is my new favorite author is because he writes how he speaks, and throws in a laugh or two -- as if you're sitting in church with him on Sunday morning. While Fearless was my first Max book, and this is my second, the teachings in his books are timeless, and I wouldn't be surprised if I pick these books up again.
"David saw Goliath as a chance for God to show off! Did David know he would exit the battle alive? No. But he was willing to give his life for the reputation of God.
What if you saw your giant in the same manner? Rather than begrudge him, welcome him. Your cancer is God's chance to flex his healing muscles. Your sin is God's opportunity to showcase grace. Your struggling marriage can billboard God's power. See your struggle as God's canvas. On it he will paint his multicolored supremacy."

I am a huge fan of music--so I thought I'd share a few songs I had on repeat this week! All of these songs can never be loud enough for me and make me want to start dancing, belt out a few notes--or both!
...And last but certainly not least!
