Yesterday was a no ordinary day...

I woke up extra tired from going to bed a little too late the night before, but that just made my coffee taste all the more better. With my hands wrapped securely around my extra large coffee cup I shuffled my feet from the kitchen to my lanai where I zone out and enjoy the amazing view I'm so very blessed with. I bring the steaming hot coffee closer to my face and breath in... it smells so good, but it's way to hot to sip quite yet. I shift in my seat getting a little more comfortable as I notice something on the ocean...

I squint, fighting my morning eyes and try to open them a little wider to focus on what looks like Captain Cook and his fleet... From far it looks just like the Hōkūle‘a, and I got really excited! I began to wake up a little more with my first sip and each sip of the delicious steaming hot coffee thereafter, and reflected on a conversation I had a few days prior with one of my friends. She mentioned a flyer she received explaining a fleet of Pacific Voyagers would be arriving our beaches around 9AM on Wednesday, and we should check it out. It sounded awesome and I knew I'd already be at the beach because of practice..

As I sat there, on my lanai, taking in the aroma's, sights, and sounds, I peacefully woke up knowing it was going to be an amazing and culturally-filled day. I continued to enjoy my coffee as six other wa'a sailed passed my house before heading out to the beach.


There were seven voyaging boats total, with over 150 voyagers. We swiftly put crews together; strokers and steersmen to shuttle our Polynesian friends from their wa'a to the beach...




Te Mana o Te Moana translates as "The Spirit of the Sea" and contributes to the wisdom of the Polynesian ancestors who loved and respected the sea. Several thousand years ago, the Polynesian ancestors traveled the Pacific on great voyaging canoes, called vaka moana, using only the stars, the ocean, and the surrounding wildlife to navigate, and lived closely connected to the sea. The purpose today for such voyages is to sail in the ancestors' wake and learn from their wisdom while teaching young people about this old bond with the sea. Launching from New Zealand, this fleet will continue to North America and further--to learn more about the Pacific Voyagers and to track their sails visit their website:)
