Today, [day 3] is all about Halloween --
For as long as I can remember Halloween has been one of the biggest events on Maui -- it has earned the reputation of being "the Mardi Gras of the Pacific" and if Halloween is your thing, Maui is definitely the place to be.
In the small town of Lahaina -- Hawaii's first capital -- the lower road known as Front Street is blocked off to cars and the evening is kicked off with a Keiki Parade where hundreds of kids in costumes walk from one end to the next. I remember the first time I went and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Once it gets dark the kids disperse, go trick or treating in neighborhoods etc. and the adults come out and play...
Front Street is loaded with restaurants and bars accommodating 30,000+ Halloween-goers with ridiculous costumes -- from well thought-out, to thrown together, to no costume(s) at all (talk about earning your beads)...
As you can see, people really get into this holiday here, flying in from all over the world, etc. - So when politics (important people complaining to important people) stifled this event the last few years, it not only put a damper on things, but it really effected the local economy! Thankfully this year has been noted as the year "Halloween is Back on Front" as numerous members and merchants of the community rallied to resurrect this epic event after the uninvited hiatus.
This biggest part for me is figuring out what I want to dress up as. I realize I have all year to decide this; however it always seems to be a last minute decision. To make it easy on myself I was Cleopatra for like four years -- huge success. Other times I was a sexy devil, pirate, and (I think) construction worker. Loads of fun.
Other years I stayed home and tended to trick-or-treaters. Some years were slow, other years were steady, and I remember this one year we literally got bus loads of children -- insane! Needless to say we ran out of candy, and I was extremely disappointed because the deal is: I get all the left over candy... so I usually only buy Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! YUM.
This year I'm not sure where I'll be or what I'll be doing. I'm almost certain I'll be here on Maui, although whether I go to Front Street is debatable. If I dress us up, I'm thinking of being an Auburn Cheerleader... but since I'd have to plan that I might just make my own costume -- we'll see -- consider it a tradition!
I was digging through a box and found a handful of OLD Halloween pictures and was tempted to post a couple. I've decided against it UNLESS you all send me some pictures of YOU dressed up in previous Halloween's!! Sounds fun, right?! Email 'em to me!
Is Halloween a big deal in your town?

I'm a sucker for the Reese's too!!!
My costume is still up in the air as is hosting a Halloween party here but who knows what October will bring!
Halloween is my favorite holiday EVER.
EVER.
Reese's peanut butter cups are my favorite candy... but Reese's piece are a close second!
I think we will be on the boat in the marina this year at Hallowe'en so no trick or treaters but we will do a Jack o'Lantern anyway. The Captain likes to carve them.
I love all the effort you are putting into these Fall posts. They are fun to read.
Halloween has to be my 2nd favorite holiday, and I'm a crazy for chocolate.
